Landfall explored the idea of the circular transmission of human experience between Europe, Africa and the Americas. The title refers to ocean and air currents in the Atlantic which flow from Europe to Africa to America and back again.
The exhibition was the culmination of a series of artists' residencies which took place in London and Houston, Texas, in 2006 bringing together a group of six artists, including a writer and a composer, from England, the USA, West Africa and the Caribbean.
The works produced embody themes of departure and return, loss and transcendence, and aspiration and expectation. These form a common language which unites all the artists as they explore their different media, be they words, melodies or images.
