Musical Postcards
Caitlyn Kamminga/Jon Deak, Trinidad 2011

Musical Postcards is a collaboration between New York based composer Jon Deak, and the Ibis Ensemble which is in residence at UTT's Academy for Performing Arts in Port of Spain, Trinidad. Jon Deak's VYC (Very Young Composers) and Caitlyn Kamminga's students from the CANOAE school string program, which offers free tuition to aspiring young musicians, will each exchange musical postcards during 2011.
The students in Trinidad wrote a piece called "Rainforest" which they performed on June 4, 2011 at the Academy for the Performing Arts in Port of Spain along with the Ibis Ensemble. The students in New York will have their composition performed at the Lincoln Center.
The process of writing "Rainforest" took place over a six week period which started with a composition workshop conducted by Dominique and then continued with classroom sessions during which members of the Ibis Ensemble and UTT colleague, french horn player/composer, Adam Walters, worked with the students to develop their musical ideas.
The project was documented in a short film "Rainforest: A Musical Postcard from Trinidad" which was screened at the 2011 Trinidad and Tobago Film Festival.
