Fragments 1: Ibis Ensemble
UTT, Trinidad, March 2011
The Ibis Ensemble, led by Double bassist Caitlyn Kamminga, is a micro version of the orchestra with each section represented through the Trombone: Aidan Chamberlain, Clarinet: Duncan Prescott, tuned percussion: Deborah Sunya Moore and percussion: Brian Kushmaul.
The musicians are members of the music faculty of UTT and the collaboration was initiated by Caitlyn Kamminga. Following on from a warm informal-but-with-intent-meeting in Trinidad, the ensemble commissioned 2 pieces from Dominique: "Fragments 1" inspired by Derek Walcott's 1992 Nobel lecture and "Calling Speaking" a signature piece for the ensemble.
The collaboration continues at a number of levels; Dominique is composing a duet for vibraphone and cajon for percussionists Moore and Kushmaul and collaborating with Caitlyn Kamminga on a Trinidadian adaptation of Stravinsky's "The Soldier's Tale".
For Dominique, the collaboration is an important one as it represents her first opportunity of writing for professional classical musicians based in Trinidad with an understanding of Trinidadian culture and the Trinidadian audience. The quality and calibre of the Ibis ensemble remains key to communicating the language and vast richness of classical music to audiences and inspiring students in Trinidad.
